Tinius Olsen Universal Testing Machine
At Thompson & Lichtner it's known simply as "The Big Machine". More formally, it's the Tinius Olsen Universal Testing Machine and its performance numbers are startling:
-
400,000 lbf. loading capacity
-
A 12 foot long and 22 inch wide bed or platen.
-
The distance from the bottom platen to the upper platen is 72 inches.
-
It has tested wooden beams up to 12 feet long.
-
The most recent calibration test indicates an accuracy of 0.41 at 400,000 lbf.
-
It can test for both compression and tension.
The Tinius Olsen Universal Testing Machine performs tension and bending tests to 400,000 lbs. and has a soil test capacity of 250,000 lbs. Static pressure test chambers and equipment for testing windows and curtainwalls for resistance to air infiltration, water penetration, and structural performance are also included at our facility, along with hydraulic jacks, micrometer dials, and other equipment for load tests of structures, structural units, piles and soils.
In compression tests, Tinius Olsen Universal Testing Machine has tested concrete masonry units, masonry prisms, wood columns and test frames. Tensile tests include reinforcing steel bars, bolts, and steel cables. Because of its accuracy, the Tinius Olsen Universal has even been used to test human bones.
With its 400,000 lbf. capacity, it is the only such commercial universal testing machine in the northeastern United States.
